Health Insurance and Retiring Early

Every Thursday, I answer a reader’s question posted in the comments section of this blog (feel free to post your question any time). Here is today’s question:

Q: My husband plans to retire at the end of this year at age 62. I am 56 and have not worked in 2 years. He will no longer have health insurance to cover him, me and our 18 year-old. My husband has several severe medical conditions. I have small medical issues. My son is healthy. We will not have medical insurance after his retirement until he reaches Medicare age (which will not cover me or my son). I now have to find work (which is very difficult) just to get health insurance because to cover all of us will cost approximately $20,000 per year. Any suggestions?
