The individual mandate, or requirement that just about all Americans purchase health insurance, is the single most controversial aspect of the new health reform law.
Those arguing against it say the requirement marks a huge overreach on the part of the federal government. Lawsuits are underway in 26 states with the goal of overturning the Affordable Care Act. The constitutionality of the law’s individual mandate is at the center of the fight.
